Details
Common Name: Gerbil
Scientific Name: Dipodillus campestris
Background: Males and Females always available, various colour variations, usually aged 8-12 weeks
Origin: Native to India, Africa and Asia
Description: Sociable animals that like to live in small groups, fond of burrowing and gnawing
Requirements:Gerbils require a space adequate enough for exercise, eating and sleeping. Female gerbils do not fare as well in big groups, and it has been found that the behavior of males in groups larger than 3-4 can be aggressive. Therefore, the best groups are about 2-4 gerbils, with a mix of the sexes if possible. It is best if the gerbils are together from around the age of six weeks, so they can socialize optimally. A glass aquarium tank with wire mesh cover, small animal cage, or tube cage like CritterTrail can all make an excellent home for gerbils. You should have at least a ten gallon tank or cage for a pair of gerbils. Bigger is always better for your pets home, so go with the largest size possible. Bedding for the bottom of the cage such as sawdust, Tunnels and tubes for playing and exploring. Play areas with sloping ramps and a climbing branch. A variety of toys that can be changed periodically. An exercise wheel. Cardboard for chewing. Paper towel and toilet paper rolls work very well. A nesting box and unscented toilet paper for use as nesting material. Stoppered water bottle. Heavy ceramic bowl for food.
